What Is Diamond Clarity?
Clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (external characteristics). Inclusions form during a diamond's growth process — tiny crystals, fractures, or pinpoints trapped inside the stone. GIA grades clarity under 10× magnification considering the type, size, position, and number of inclusions.
The GIA Clarity Scale
- FL — Flawless: No inclusions or blemishes under 10×. Extremely rare.
- IF — Internally Flawless: No inclusions; minor surface blemishes only.
- VVS1 / VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included: Minuscule inclusions very difficult to see under 10×.
- VS1 / VS2 — Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions noticeable under 10× magnification but not to the naked eye.
- SI1 / SI2 — Slightly Included: Inclusions noticeable under 10×; many SI1 are eye-clean.
- I1 / I2 / I3 — Included: Inclusions visible to the naked eye; may affect brilliance.
Our Recommendation
For maximum value: target VS2 to SI1 and verify the stone is eye-clean by examining high-resolution imagery or requesting our free video call with a gemologist. All Avelyngold diamonds are individually reviewed and we do not list I1–I3 clarity stones.
Clarity and Shape
Step-cut shapes (emerald, Asscher, baguette) have large open facets that act like mirrors — inclusions are more visible. Aim for VS1 or better in emerald cuts. Brilliant cuts (round, cushion, oval) hide inclusions better; SI1 is often perfectly eye-clean.
