The 4Cs — Clarity

Diamond Clarity: From Flawless to Included

Clarity describes the internal and external characteristics of a diamond. Understanding the scale helps you find an eye-clean diamond without overpaying for microscopic perfection.

What Is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity measures the presence of inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (external characteristics). Inclusions form during a diamond's growth process — tiny crystals, fractures, or pinpoints trapped inside the stone. GIA grades clarity under 10× magnification considering the type, size, position, and number of inclusions.

The GIA Clarity Scale

  • FL — Flawless: No inclusions or blemishes under 10×. Extremely rare.
  • IF — Internally Flawless: No inclusions; minor surface blemishes only.
  • VVS1 / VVS2 — Very Very Slightly Included: Minuscule inclusions very difficult to see under 10×.
  • VS1 / VS2 — Very Slightly Included: Minor inclusions noticeable under 10× magnification but not to the naked eye.
  • SI1 / SI2 — Slightly Included: Inclusions noticeable under 10×; many SI1 are eye-clean.
  • I1 / I2 / I3 — Included: Inclusions visible to the naked eye; may affect brilliance.

Our Recommendation

For maximum value: target VS2 to SI1 and verify the stone is eye-clean by examining high-resolution imagery or requesting our free video call with a gemologist. All Avelyngold diamonds are individually reviewed and we do not list I1–I3 clarity stones.

Clarity and Shape

Step-cut shapes (emerald, Asscher, baguette) have large open facets that act like mirrors — inclusions are more visible. Aim for VS1 or better in emerald cuts. Brilliant cuts (round, cushion, oval) hide inclusions better; SI1 is often perfectly eye-clean.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 'eye-clean' mean?
Eye-clean means no inclusions or blemishes are visible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance (about 25 cm). Most VS2 and many SI1 diamonds are eye-clean. This is the practical sweet spot for value.
Is FL (Flawless) worth buying?
For most people, no. Flawless and Internally Flawless (IF) look identical to VS1 in real life. The premium is enormous (40–70% over VS1) for a difference visible only under 10× magnification. Unless rarity and investment are priorities, the premium is better spent on cut or carat.
Are SI1 diamonds safe to buy?
SI1 is one of the best-value grades. Many SI1 diamonds are perfectly eye-clean — inclusions exist but are typically small, white, or positioned near the girdle where they're masked by the setting. Always request a magnified photo or video to check the inclusion type and position.
What types of inclusions are worst?
Dark crystals (black inclusions) visible near the table (centre top of the diamond) are the hardest to overlook. Needles, clouds, and feathers near the edges or underneath the setting are the least noticeable. Avelyngold's gemologists exclude diamonds with high-impact inclusions.
Does clarity affect sparkle?
In most cases, no. Only heavy inclusions (I1–I3) significantly affect brilliance by blocking light paths. A VS1 and an SI1 will sparkle identically — the difference is invisible to the naked eye.
